Presenting the real life Spinal Tap!
The King of Pop may be gone, but the KFS will fill the screen of The Little Theatre with the prince consorts of Heavy Metal the weekend of July 17-19 when we present ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL. In the early 1980s, the Canadian band Anvil was the blueprint for other groups like Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer. While those bands went on to become music titans, Anvil faded into obscurity--so much that decades later, the band’s core members--guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner--work menial day-jobs even as they continue to churn out little-heard records and dream of rock-star success. Director Sacha Gervasi chronicles the duo’s efforts to regain their '80s glory in this funny and touching documentary. Despite the snicker-inducing heavy-metal trappings, this is also a warmly human portrait of two men pursuing their creative passions against Sisyphean odds. Their struggles will ring true to anyone who has felt the pull of the artist’s life and wondered whether it would ever pay off. In Anvil's case, audiences will be rooting for them to finally make it to the big time. Showtimes for ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL will be: Friday, July 17 – 7:00 and 9:30pm Saturday, July 18 – 4:30, 7:00 and 9:30pm Sunday, July 19 – 3:00, 5:00 and 7:00pm Please note the slightly adjusted showtimes for Sunday. Also, all tickets for this film will be at the conveniently low price of $5. Kalamazoo Film SocietySeriously, you do not want to miss this movie. WATCH THE TRAILER! Current Mood: excited |

Second Symposium on Astrosociology DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JULY 30, 2009! ( Second Symposium on Astrosociology at SPESIF 2010 )Of particular note is that the Medical Astrosociology section is in real need of papers, if there is even the slightest chance you might be interested, please contact me. I found out less than a week ago that I'm to chair it, if there are papers. Of course they tell me this right before the initial deadline so I didn't get a chance to do any publicity since I wasn't originally planning on attending the conference. If you know of any students that are currently working in any area that combines social sciences and outer space that might want to present some work (either a paper or presentation), have them send in an abstract. I think there is the option of a poster as well. Feel free to pass this on to any other person or other faculty that might be interested. And yes, we accept things that are "weird" so try us. Here are some important things to note. There will be student rates, but any interested student would have to confirm with the head of the conference on what those rates are. There is also a coattending student discount that is even cheaper, but their professor has to be at the conference as well. Also the $50 reading fee that the head of the conference is trying to charge for papers only is going to be waived for most people so try to not worry about that. I just uploaded the pdf to my website so you can view everything if you want to... Astrosociology sessions. If you are submitting a paper, abstract, or title to any of these sessions I would really appreciate being CCed. I can also help you decide where your paper goes if you are unsure. cloth car wash.
Are there any cloth car washes in Bloomington? You know, the kind where your car gets slapped around by huge wet pieces of felt during the process? NOT a "no touch" kind? |

Intellectual Property How are you trained to handle possible copyright infringement? Does your library post notices by the copy machines? If you hear that a patron intends to borrow and copy a boatload of music CDs, do you say something? I ask because despite how often this topic is broached in library school, the system I work for now seems willing to do both the wink-wink thing and active infringement, especially in decorating the children's area. |

My Web Page I would like to announce that I finally had the bravery to open my literature (reading) web page. you're invited to visit the page since I will be reviewing some books that have not been released yet. I will have three contests as part of the page's inauguration celebration. I will be giving away: One Harry Potter Gryffindor collector pin, a $100 Amazon Gift Card and the Twilight Diaries along with some other books too, so be very wary on updates and the mailing list. http://windowpane-memoirs.com/ Current Mood: blah |

Hey everyone! I just have a question, not sure if I'll get a straight forward answer or not, but... I am currently an Undergraduate studen at Arizona State University and I will be graduating next spring with an interdisciplinary studies degree in European History and Anthropology. I have been researching a few grad programs in Europe and some in the US and I really want to go into some sort of Archaeological field, but the thing is, I have this crazy vision for what I want to focus on, and from what I have researched, it's not out there, atleast not at any of the universities I have been looking at. Here it is: I am visioning a career that inolves all of these fields: -Archaeology -Paleoanthropology -Forensic Archaeology -Writing (Literature/screenplay) -European History -Research for Film/Television I know that is a whole load of stuff that have relatively nothing to do with one another, but I really want to someday be a writer (novelist) who can draw inspiration from archaeological finds and create/envision background stories involving characters, settings, conflicts etc centering around those finds. I would even like to someday be an archaeological historian for film/television. (you know, those people that research for historical based films/tv shows ex: The Tudors, The other Boleyn Girl, etc etc etc) I hope that wasn't too confusing... If anyone knows what type of field I should be looking into, PLEASE help me out! Thanks! |

Cats 'Exploit' Humans by Purring
Cat owners may have suspected as much, but it seems our feline friends have found a way to manipulate us humans. Researchers at the University of Sussex have discovered that cats use a "soliciting purr" to overpower their owners and garner attention and food. Unlike regular purring, this sound incorporates a "cry", with a similar frequency to a human baby's. The team said cats have "tapped into" a human bias - producing a sound that humans find very difficult to ignore. Original Article or ( Read more... ) |

Entrants into library school
Hello everyone, I’ve been reading the requirements to the entrants for library school and have noticed that a lot of them say that they require a 2.8 or 3.0 in the last 60 credits. Does this mean they don’t look at your first 60 credits or do they just assume that they were good since you were taking easier classes? In my case I have above a 3.0 in my last 60 but my first 60 are really low, like 2.2. I do well in my major classes just not in obscure classes that I know I’ll never need again. Will this hurt me? Will my last 60 be the most important? My combined gpa will probably be around 2.7 which is why I like them concentrating on just the last 60. Thanks |

New
Hi! I have recently decided to change my education goals and have just started looking into a library science career. What undergrad degree has been the most helpful (mine is chemistry at the moment)? I have no experience working in a library what would be a good position to go after now with no degree?? Thank you for your advice! |

Hair salon
I checked the memories and it looks like all the salon-related posts are from 2005 and 2006. So! Anyone have recent recommendations for a women's haircut, under $50, in the next week? I'm leaving town for good next Sunday, and I need to get a haircut before then. Last time I went to Mira, I had Leigh, and she did a good job, but I'd be curious if you all like other stylists there (I have heard good things about Jackie and Nicole?), or have better salon recommendations. Random note: has anyone seen a stylist around town named Russell (I don't know his last name)? He's a middle-aged man with graying black hair...For awhile I was following him to different cheap salons--the man did wonders with my hair. But he disappeared--so, if anyone has any idea of his work-related whereabouts, I'd appreciate it! Thanks. |

Question concerning preparing for graduate school
I would like to work in an academic library in a position that uses technology heavily. I am considering getting an associate's in computer and information systems before entering a MLIS program to acquire a strong technology background. My local community college offers an associate's with a programming concentration and one with a networking technology concentration. Which do you think would be more useful for a library setting? Here are the courses for each specialty (they all have the same foundational courses): Programming: BUS 241 Principles of Accounting I | 3 | BUS 242 Principles of Accounting II | 3 | CIS 147 Advanced Microcomputer Applications | 3 | CIS 222 Database Management Systems | 3 | CIS 278 Operating Systems | 3 | CIS 251 C++ Programming | 3 | CIS Programming Electives (can include CIS 198, CIS 244, CIS 255, CIS 261 CIS 282) | 9 | CIS 281 Systems Analysis | 3 | CIS 288 Networking | 3 | CIS Advanced Programming Electives (can include CIS 213, CIS 252, CIS 262, CIS 293, CIS 299) | 9 | CIS 212 Visual BASIC | 3 |
Networking (Web technology sub-field): CIS 147 Advanced Microcomputer Applications | 3 | CIS 151 Graphics for the World Wide Web ORCIS 197DD Flash OR CIS 197EE Fireworks | 3 | CIS 197GG Web Page Scripting (Perl) | 3 | CIS 207 Introduction to Web Development | 3 | CIS 208 Intermediate Web Development OR CIS 197CC Dreamweaver OR OAD 233 Trends of Office Technology | 3 | CIS 209 Advanced Web Development | 3 | CIS 255 Java Programming | 3 | CIS 273 Introduction to Networking Communication | 3 |

dealing with parents is like walking in a minefield
Dose anyone know the best way to address parents who yell at there kids in the library. I don't want to confront them in front of there kids so I usually just politely ask them to to keep it down and if it happens again I tell them that if they don't think there children can behave in the library they would be better off checking out books and bringing them home for the kids (even though the majority of them are just here for the computers). But today, there was a patron who I have had this issue with a few times before and she will yell at her son completely pointless things like today he dropped a book by accident and his Mother yelled at him to pick it up and then went on to yell at him about how worthless his father is. The boy had done nothing wrong, and I didn't want it to sound like I was blaming him, I ended up suggesting that in the future she goes to the Main branch which is more kid friendly. She just gave me this look like she was disgusted that I would say anything to her, and said "do you have kids" I said "no, I'm just trying to make sure the library stays quiet for everyone else" she just laughed at me, and I said "please try and keep the noise to a minimum" which sounded stupid and a few minutes later she left. dose any one have any advice for when this happens in the future? I know people get very sensitive when there children are involved. Out side of working at my University library this is my first Library job and I want to do well so when I apply to the MLS program I can have good references, but even my supervisor treats me like a little kid. On top looking like I'm still in high school being white makes look like I don't belong even more. HELP!!! Current Mood: aggravated |

Anthropology & Nuclear Waste Storage
How to deal with nuclear waste is a serious question that anthropologists are helping to solve. One major issue is the rise and fall of civilizations while the waste remains dangerous (thousands of years). "Expert Judgment on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant" is a document that tries to answer the questions of how to communicate with people in the far future, through language, culture, and civilization changes that will inevitably occur over the next several thousand years. How to communicate that the nuclear waste is dangerous, how to physically and mentally repel intrusions in the waste area, and how to be sure that future peoples don't ignore these warnings like we currently ignore the curses warned of in ancient Egyptian tombs. Take a look, I found the information to be incredibly interesting and creative. Discussion of linguistics and symbolism start on about page 244. For more information about the project, Wikipedia has a good little description. |
